Abstract

Altaf Hussain Hali, a prominent literary figure in Urdu literature in the late 19th century is well-reputed and renowned for using the literary device of allusion in his poetry which adds further depth and richness to his poetry on the one hand while rendering his works complex and intricate on the other. By employing numerous allusions to remarkable historical events, classical literature, and religious texts and traditions, the poetry of Hali stands tall over his contemporaries. The current research delves deep into his use of allusion in his popular poem Nishat e Ummeed exploring and analysing the different perspectives and purposes of poet behind using this complex literary device.
