Abstract

ABSTRACT This review article attempts to scan the trends, developments and major events in development of Urdu journalism and source material that shaped the Urdu journalism. To achieve this end, individual efforts by prominent journalist, prominent books, and intervention of technology in each major era is analyzed. The review covers more than two hundred years of span, and it is observed that Urdu journalism started with mere reporting and chained in self-censorship is now thriving and covers almost all aspects of human activity. Besides, technological development enabled in early 80’s to process Urdu mechanically and in Nastaliq type face. This resulted in major uplift in esthetics, low-costproduction and speed of work. In present age, due to information technology and electronic media, Urdu journalism is thriving and in need of more effort at capacity building and regulatory compliance
