Abstract

ABSTRACT:

Majeed Amjad in his poetry worked different layers and dimensions. One such dimension is diversity in his poetry. He takes ordinary sights and sounds of life and shapes them in such a way that we partake linguistic pleasure and sublime substance from such poems as ' Panwari ‘, Autograph, Kunaan (The well), Maqbara Jahangir (Mausoleum of Jahangir), Kar e Khair (welfare) etc. Secondly, he takes his subjects from life and that too from images of life that we generally consider nothing out of the ordinary and indeed take them for granted. Here Amjad's poetic genius comes into full play. He treats such images in such a way that they begin to suddenly represent profound and complex realities of life.  Phoolon ki Paltan (Platoon of flowers) is a case in point. An almost casual interaction between two sets of generations not only magnify generational differences but more importantly, class differences and the resultant effect of marginalization of those at the wrong end of the spoon. Majeed Amjad is nothing if not a diligently unique crafter of poetic forms, poetic linguistics, innovative metaphors and similes. The cumulative effect of this entropy is a collage of beauty and profundity. Further, Amjad derives strength and vigour from myths and legends from his own backyard so to speak. Local colour, sights and sounds of South Asia not only permeates his poetic creativity but it also gives a special insight and individuality to it. Here we find a very welcome echo of Yeats who drove inspiration from sights and sounds, from mythology of his Ireland. Majeed Amjad is special and spectacular in the sense that he does not remain hinged to yesteryears, but is aware and cognizant of realities, complexities and intricacies of the present world. A deep understanding and consciousness permeate Majeed Amjad's vision which time and again comes out sharp and vivid in his sublime poetry. In the present article the aforementioned characteristics of his poetry have been studied as they play out in the selected poems reflected upon in the present article.
