Abstract

“Tirvini” is comparatively a new form of poetry. A renowned Indian poet, novelist and film-producer Gulzar is credited with its origination. A Tirvini has three lines and carries any of the stock or unconventional topics. First two lines make a complete rhyming verse while the third serves as a ventilator. Sometimes it unfolds the mystery in the foregoing lines and on another time it seizes the reader with utter surprise. It means the third lines is the most important part of Tirvini. A poet enjoys freedom in the use of any meter in prosodic forms. This article holds a brief account of the progress of Trivini through olden to recent times along with its peculiar attributes, elements and impression.  Prominent poets of the sub-continent who used this form of poetry are discussed with the excerpts from their works only to ascertain how far this form has affected the Urdu poesy. The distinctive features of Tirvini have been drawn to differentiate it from other similar forms of poetry.
