Abstract

ABSTRACT Asadullah Khan Ghalib (1797-1869) is considered as one of the most important cultural figure of early seventeenth centaury in British India. He enriched Urdu as well as Persian literature through his poetry, letters and persona. This article is consisting of comparison between his Persian poetry and its Urdu translations. After many examples it is concluded that though there are numerous translations of Ghalib, as he deserves for his eminence, but many of them failed to maintain quality consistently in their works. It is suggested that collection of all best translated pieces, an anthology could be better effort to present Ghalib in Urdu. It is also concluded that poetic translation, specially of a poet of Ghalib stature and complex style, is ongoing process; and study of previous translations could enlighten better methods and expression for new translations.
