development of Insha'iyah, literary artists, Dr. Wazir AghaAbstract
This paper explores the development of Insha'iyah as a genre in Urdu Literature. Insha'iyah (Light Essay) the origin of which is controversial among critics and literary artists. Researchers have tried to trace its origin to Mulla Wajhi’s work “Sub Ras”. At the same time, Dr. Waheed Qureshi has gone to the extent of tracing its origin to Adam A.S. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Niaz Fateh Pori’s name has also counted among prisoners of the genre. Some researchers have found traces of Inshaiyah in the works of Abdul Haleem Sharar, Sajjad Ansari, Mehdi Afadi, Mir Nasir Ali, Khwaja Hassan Nizami, Rashid Ahmad Siddiqi, Abul Kalam Azad, Patras Bukhari, Falak Feema, Krishan Chandar and Kanhia Lal Kapoor, and even the letters of Ghalib. However, in Urdu literature Inshaiyah proper is associated with Dr. Wazir Agha, even though critics and literary figures have disputed the principles laid down by him. Despite differences, Inshaiyah as a distinct genre can rightly be said to have been introduced and popularized by Dr. Wazir Agha.
