Abstract

ABSTRACT The name of Jamila Hashmi in modern Urdu literary tradition is synonymous with experimentation with narrative structure and plot. Her novel, ‘Talash e Baharan”, won great acclaim owing to its theme and stylistic structure. In this novel some of characters wants to live in past. This nostalgic attitude is studied in this article and for the purpose, psycho-analysis of characters and of the writeris attempted.The novel is a case study in the clash of the Eastern and Western ethos and how the latter is responsible for much of the degradation in contemporary society. Jamila presented in the novel all three major types of nostalgia belonging to time, space and individuals; thus, not only this proves her craft but also her personal yearning for return to past.
