Abstract

NaseerTurabi had been a major urdu poet is known for  poems and more so in the genre of Ghazal wherein he creates novelty and traditions anew. He focuses on religious aspects of  poem (Nazam) and predominantly broods of elegy; poetry composed on the death of a great persona.  In elegy, he particularly concentrates on the genre of "Salam "; a type of tribute and homage in elegy to a religious character who in this case is HazratHurr   (a faithful disciple of Imam Hussain RA).The term "Hurr " in urdu literature has been derived from the follower  of Imam Hussain (RA) named "Hurr " . It literally means "Free Man” , a person who is slave to none  whereas the term "Hurriyiat " derived from "Hurr " means "attaining freedom from slavery.

"Hurriyiat " signifies  a thinking and  attitude wherein one has to live by the principle of freedom of conscience,  making efficient and immediate decision within a short span of time,  standing by the side  of truth against the "Untruth " . His fidelity to HazratHussain (RA), the symbol of righteousness made him stand steadfast. He refused to yield before the forces of evil and achieved universality. He became a beacon of righteousness to be followed by succeeding generations.  This was what Naseerturabi focused on in his "Salam " in elegy tradition.  He attempted to give a message of distinction of the righteous and  truth from the unrighteous and falsehood so that the readers and listeners may receive inspiration and adopt his model in their lives to pave the way for the establishment of a society based on truth and struggle for freedom of conscience.
